The 90s are coming back in full force right today (via W Magazine). Everything from television to fashion and music is pinning for the past, with Clueless as well as Tamagotchis. There’s a craving to relive the decade’s best renowned snacks. One of the most recognizable of them was the 3D Doritos.
As per Snack History, the 90s were among the most sought-after times for the corn chip that is famously known as Doritos. Following a revamp by the producer Frito-Lay in 1994, which made the chips larger thinner, lighter, and more delicious, popularity of Doritos was higher than they had ever been. Doritos were firmly established as one of America’s most loved snacks. In the last quarter in the decade they launched their 3D Doritos. These puffy versions of the original corn chips came out as Jalapeno Popper, Zesty Ranch along with Nacho Cheese flavor (via Food Business News).
They were quickly embraced because of a commercial featuring the former Miss USA Ali Landry, according to NBC 6 South Florida, but they ended up being cut off sometime in the mid 2000s when their appeal waned.
After nearly 20 years, Food Business News reports that 3D Doritos launched their comeback towards the end of 2020. It was a major win for those who loved the original snack, who needed something to be excited about after a tough year. The snack was revived with a slight rebranding The Doritos 3-D Crunch. The snack was only sold in two flavors: spicy ranch or chili cheese nacho. They also came back in packaging that was more similar to traditional Doritos rather than the tubes they had in their original release.
“Doritos 3D Crunch is among of the most anticipated launches of our products in the history of Frito-Lay,” said Frito-Lay North America senior vice president and chief marketing officer Rachel Ferdinando. “What’s amazing is the fact that we did not return the originalwe’ve redesigned in order to better reflect eating fashions of the new generation. We’re excited to launch the new version at a moment when everyone could benefit from just a little bit of joy.”
According to Today The report states that the return of the snack was also praised in the past by spokesmodel Ali Landry who made a return to the launch. She posted on Instagram to gather her followers for the #Doritos3Dchallenge that she hosted on TikTok and the participants were asked to put the snack in their mouths “in the most outrageous way” in a tribute to her initial Super Bowl commercial.
